Barbara Donick earned a B.A. in education at Goucher College and an M.Ed. at Johns Hopkins University. At St. Paul’s School in Baltimore, she taught in a special program for dyslexic students. She then worked in the Jemicy School Outreach Program conducting teacher workshops in reading instruction. Barbara is also a trainer of tutors at the Dyslexia Tutoring Program. From her experience in the teacher training workshops, Barbara realized that colleges were not preparing teachers with the knowledge and tools they needed to teach all of their students to read. She began reaching out to legislators and educators about the need to improve teacher preparation in scientific based reading instruction. This developed into Right to Read-Maryland, a consortium of educational organizations, advocates, and supporters who have the common goal of improving teacher education aligned with what we now know about the science of reading.
